A blog
is a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style. This blog itself is the result of trying a new hobby! After writing two posts, I feel like I have tried enough of this to give everyone a little insights into the world of beginner’s blogging.
My first issue was deciding what to blog about. I had been told that a blog should feature something exciting and new to grab the reader’s attention. This gave me a lot of freedom in what I could write about, but sometimes having more choice means less productivity and this was certainly the case when deciding the subject of my blog.
Eventually I settled on documenting my time of trying new hobbies, as Convivial is about new experiences and advising and connecting people through that. Thus, ‘Thai Tries Things’ was born.
My first post was about tree planting. I visited Capertee Valley with a group of volunteers and while planting trees I made a mental note about what steps I had to go through and what I was thinking/feeling like at the time. I then jotted down these mental notes into my phone and after a hard day of planting I was left with a jumble of words on my phone and a blog post to write. I felt no further forward towards my goal of a blog post than I did when I started the day, despite the fact I now had an experience to write about.

My next step was to sit with my laptop and stare at an empty Word document until inspiration came to me. Not surprisingly, this didn’t work well and no epiphany came to me from the blank page. Desperate to get something going, I wrote out a timeline of what I had done that day with some of my notes from earlier slotted in appropriate places.
This was definitely a helpful thing for me to do. From then on I had a base to work from and it was just a matter of writing it so it made sense and had a purpose. I quite enjoyed looking back over those hours tree planting and telling others about it through typing and I used this method of taking notes and making a timeline for my next post, which was also enjoyable.
Overall, I’ve liked blogging and I would recommend it to anyone who has something to say to people. It is also well worth reading some blogs on something that interests you, as it is an entertaining way to learn new things about your favourite hobbies.
