Pop Punk Album Does Not Fall
Eleanor Murray
Have you ever thought to yourself: ‘country music is all well and good but it isn't that great at getting me energised before my marathons?’ Maybe you’re over listening to your Granny’s Mozart and you want something more modern so your friends will think you’re hip (kids these days say hip right?). Well look no further my friend, you have come to the right place.

Ok, chances are you don’t relate to either of these situations but that doesn’t matter, this album could still be for you. If you’re over listening to the same old mainstream pop music that plays on the radio but you’ve never listened to pop punk before then I would definitely recommend this album. It can be a good pathway into discovering a whole new genre where young men wear black, dye their hair and have piercings and tattoos. If that scares you then you probably won’t like this album, sorry.
American rock band Fall Out Boy released a new album at the start of this year, American Beauty/ American Psycho. It is the band’s sixth studio album, it is the in the pop rock/pop punk genre as were the band’s previous albums. It is the band’s first album since their comeback album Save Rock and Roll in 2013.
The band was very influenced by artists such as Paramore and The Get Up Kids. Patrick Stump (the lead singer and main composer) was aiming to make an album with a more connected feel, so that all the songs had a similar sound and you could tell they were from the same album. Pete Wentz (the bass player and main lyric writer) was focusing on writing lyrics that were relevant to the pop culture of today. The band has a legacy of being the ‘big culturally relevant rock band’.
The overall tone for this album is quite angry with a lot of passion in the lyrics. It features a lot of shouted choruses. All the songs are up-tempo and great for singing along to or aggressive head banging if that’s your thing. One of the songs that achieved a lot of international success was Immortals. This is probably due to it being featured on the soundtrack of the 2014 Walt Disney animated movie Big Hero 6. The album’s first single Centuries achieved Platinum top 10 three times. The album’s title track which was released as a second single debuted at No. 1 on the US Billboard 200.
My favourite track on the album is Novocaine. It has a very aggressive feel to it. It’s very loud, most of the lyrics are shouted. I quite like songs like this but this style of music isn’t for everyone. That said, if you don’t like angry sounding songs that get you fired up then this album probably isn’t for you. My least favourite song is Twin Skeleton’s (Hotel in NYC). This song is a letdown for me, it isn’t terrible, it just isn’t up to the standard of the other songs. All the other songs on the album are great, there aren’t many albums where I can say that. I guess it would be too good to be true if I liked every single song on this one.
Overall I give this album a 9/10. It has a really synchronised feel so that every song feels connected. The songs are all really upbeat, great music to listen to when you’re sad or angry. I find myself singing the lyrics all the time without even realising it, they’re just the kind of songs that get in your head. I hadn’t listened to much music in this genre before and listening to this album has made me aware of a whole lot of music that I’m really enjoying.
What do you think? Have you listened to much pop punk/rock music before? Do you know many of Fall Out Boy’s other albums? If you’ve listened to this album, please leave a comment letting me know what you thought and which song is your favourite.
