Show So Funny It Hertz

‘The IT Crowd’ is a British comedy about two IT nerds (Roy, played by Chris O’Dowd and Moss, played by Richard Ayoade) working from the basement of the company building, led by their not-so-tech-savvy manager (Jen, played by Katherine Parkinson). The show follows the team as they get into hilarious situations both in their workplace at Renholm Industries and around London.

After watching the first episode of this show, I was a little unsure about whether it would become another cliché comedy full of overused nerd jokes. I enjoyed the characters but during the setup for season one there was little room to build up the kind of hilarious situations that would occur later in the season. Luckily I persisted on and by the time I reached the end of season one, ‘The IT Crowd’ had become one of my all-time favourite shows.
I think the hilarity of the show comes from two things; the characters and the crazy situations these characters get into.
The characters are quirky and subtle, with just the right amount of weirdness to make them interesting while still being relatable. Roy (Chris O’Dowd) is an intelligent but lazy Irishman, who seems to usually be the ‘damsel in distress’ when things inevitably go wrong, Moss (Richard Ayoade) is a computer genius incapable of performing basic tasks without comical results and Jen (Katherine Parkinson) is a more sociable and normal person, but her lack of IT knowledge and habit of telling lies get the group into a lot of trouble. Although these are the three main characters, my favourite character has to be Richmond (Noel Fielding). Richmond was once a young businessman at the top of Renholm Industries, but after discovering a band called Cradle of Filth, he became obsessed with their music and transformed into a Goth. Richmond was then banished to the basement with the IT workers where he lives out a solitary life, occasionally making an appearance in the show. The genius of Richmond’s character is the way he displays his over-the-top emo attitude, without seeming mopey or annoying. He is certainly a Goth and sometimes prides himself on this, but he is content being a Goth and this shows through his long monologues.
If you don’t mind minor spoilers, watch this short clip of Richmond to see what I mean.

The situations these characters find themselves in are also wacky and humorous. The characters generally start the episode on a normal work day, and slowly progress in a believable way to random moments that make you laugh out loud. From ‘Gay- A Gay Musical’ to dinner with a German cannibal, ‘The IT Crowd’ has a plot that’s hard to forget.
Overall, ‘The IT Crowd’ is funny and exciting and I would recommend this to any teens or adults looking for a laugh. The intro alone is worth watching and the show will always be one of the best, in my opinion.
